EAST BAY BOOKSELLERS is pleased to host another installment of Freud's Bar on Tuesday, February 13th at 6:30pm. The theme of their upcoming segments this Fall and Winter is Tickling the Unconscious. The topic of this meeting will be "From Freud's House to Our House: Experiencing the Uncanny." The evening's featured presenter is Laurie Case, PhD.

Are you interested in the world of psychology but afraid you may not understand all of the terms and jargon? Join us for monthly talks given by local Bay Area psychoanalysts. You don't need to be a psychologist to check out Freud's Bar. Just bring your interest and a friend!

Using a visit to the Tate Modern and Freud’s House in London as our starting point, we will embark on an exploration of the uncanny. A first stop will be a consideration of surrealism’s attempt to capture the unconscious, the limitations of this project and an alternative understanding of surrealist art as an example of the uncanny, an idea that springs from the uncanny uncanniness of a seemingly mundane visit to the Freud museum. Freud’s essay entitled "The Uncanny" will be our guide on this foray into the disorientation that lurks within the reassuringly known and homey. We will also the uncanny elements at work in James Joyce’s short story "The Dead."
