Anne Helen Petersen discusses TOO FAT, TOO SLUTTY, TOO LOUD (with Lili Loofbourow)
Thursday, November 9
EAST BAY BOOKSELLERS welcomes Anne Helen Petersen to the store to discuss her collection of essays, Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman on Thursday, November 9th, at 7pm. She will be in conversation with Lili Loofbourow.
"Every few decades, an unruly female celebrity inflames the popular consciousness. What distinguishes our current cultural moment, then, is how thoroughly 'unruly' women have come to dominate the zeitgeist." In Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud, cultural critic Anne Helen Petersen has written a catalog of unruly women: celebrities and other cultural figures who have been called too strong, too fat, too gross, too slutty, too old, too pregnant, too shrill, too queer, too loud and too naked for uncomplicated cultural acceptance. She ranges from Serena Williams (too strong) to Lena Dunham (too naked) and shows how each woman defies norms while still staying close enough to the edges of respectability to achieve mainstream success.
